Do you support recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by changing the Constitution or making some other kind of legal change?
Yes
What should the change look like?
The change must be clear and all encompassing. Not some half-hearted attempt.
Should we have a statement that acknowledges the First Peoples of Australia?
Yes. This should be in the Constitution.
Where is the best place to put it?
Up front and centre to show racist people that their attitudes are not acceptable in any way shape or form
What should the statement say?
Clearly state there were people living rich lives across the entire continent well before Europeans arrived.
Do you have any other comments on a statement about the First Peoples of Australia?
We must acknowledge our amazing First Peoples to create an inclusive country. It is the only way to teach all Australians how important our First People are to this country. It has start at the 'top'.
Should the word 'race' be taken out of the Constitution?
Yes
Should the Australian Parliament keep the power to make special laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
No
Do you have any other comments on powers to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
Why would there be 'special' laws for any race in Australia if we are attempting to be anti-racist? Australian is Australian regardless and so the laws should be equally for everyone who lives here. If true recognition is achieved this should also filter
Do you think that a guarantee against racial discrimination should go into the Constitution?
Yes
Do you have any ideas about what words to use for that guarantee, or where in the Constitution to put it?
Words like inclusive, accepting, respect, recognise, encompassing. Positive affirmations.
Should the guarantee protect all Australians against racial discrimination, or only Indigenous Australians?
All Australians
If there is not enough support for a guarantee in the Constitution, what other things can we do to stop racial discrimination in national laws?
Ensure any decisions/laws/policies from our governments (Fed, state and local) uphold anti discrimination to the full extent and not be watered down
Do you think Indigenous people should have a say when Parliament and government make laws and policies about Indigenous affairs?
Yes
Should a new Indigenous group be set up under the Constitution to give advice and make sure Indigenous people have a voice in political decisions that affect them?
Yes
Is it worth creating the new group if it can only give advice and does not have the power to block new laws?
Yes
Do you have any ideas about what the new group would look like?
Men, women and other, and all ages.
Do you have any other comments on this Indigenous group?
If it didn't have power to block it is at least a start? At very least have the power to cause further discussion/research or whatever is required to make fair (in the group's view) decisions around laws.
Should we delete section 25?
Yes
What would we achieve by getting rid of section 25?
Proof of inclusivity
Is there any point in keeping it?
None whatsoever! We need to educate all Australians to better understand what rascism is and how it damages society.
Do you have any other comments?
We need to be positive and uplifting, inclusive and respectful, and avoid negative and exclusive words/attitudes.
Are you making a submission on behalf of a person (such as yourself) or organisation?
