Greek Workers Educational Association of SA "Platon" Inc.
What is the postal code of the organisation?
None
Do you support recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by changing the Constitution or making some other kind of legal change?
Yes
What should the change look like?
Recognising the historical fact that the ATSI peoples were and remain the traditional land owners and occupiers of Australia.
Should we have a statement that acknowledges the First Peoples of Australia?
Yes. This should be in a normal Australian law, but not in the Constitution.
What should the statement say?
If Constitution is not changed [as above] then the terms of the Constitutional change as proposed should be elaborated in a Statement to set the historical record straight.
Do you have any other comments on a statement about the First Peoples of Australia?
Provided the Constitution is changed to recognise the ATSI people [above], repeating this fact in a statement may go to further explain the historical situation in the current context we find ourselves in 2017
Should the word 'race' be taken out of the Constitution?
Yes
Should the Australian Parliament keep the power to make special laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
No
Do you have any other comments on powers to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
The question is how ATSI people can be mainstreamed while facilitated to retain the integrity of their culture while recognised as separate to but still an integral part of Australian multicultural community. Care needs to ensure we do not have a discrimi
Do you think that a guarantee against racial discrimination should go into the Constitution?
Yes
Do you have any ideas about what words to use for that guarantee, or where in the Constitution to put it?
In a preamble in similar terms such as ..."All people are created equal ... and to live free of any/all form of discrimination ...."
Should the guarantee protect all Australians against racial discrimination, or only Indigenous Australians?
All Australians
If there is not enough support for a guarantee in the Constitution, what other things can we do to stop racial discrimination in national laws?
Ensure the education system is the driver of learning from early childhood to Y12. Then to have enforcement through educational programs and community awareness programs.
Do you think Indigenous people should have a say when Parliament and government make laws and policies about Indigenous affairs?
Yes
Should a new Indigenous group be set up under the Constitution to give advice and make sure Indigenous people have a voice in political decisions that affect them?
No
Do you have any other comments on this Indigenous group?
Parliament should create a statutory body to focus on priority issues and to set and achieve outcomes to be reported to Parliament, which should be the body where the buck stops regarding accountability.
Should we delete section 25?
Yes
What would we achieve by getting rid of section 25?
The deletion reinforces the point to recognise that "All people are created equal'. Stops the Australian Conservatives & One Nation Parties singling out vulnerable groups e.g Marine Le Penn [Fr] re Muslims for political gain.
Is there any point in keeping it?
Australian citizenship is the paramount determining criteria required to permit a person to vote. Close the door on any political opportunism and racial bigotry.
Do you have any other comments?
The Greek WEA was founded on 4 October 1957 and has engaged in settlement, job security, naturalisation and other social justice issues concerning Greek migrants and their families. We identify with the pain and suffering of the ATSI people and oppose the
